Over the past months, Iā€™ve found myself drawn to the world of spirituality, delving into yoga philosophy, Buddhism, and mindfulness techniques like Vipassana and Zazen. This past Christmas, I embarked on a 10-day Vipassana retreat at the Dhamma Center in Cambodia, eager to delve deeper into this powerful practice.

Instead of recounting my own journey into the profound world of Vipassana, I want to turn the spotlight onto yours. This guide is for anyone drawn to the transformative power of this meditation practice. Here, youā€™ll find a concise overview of what to expect and how to prepare, empowering you to embark on your own exploration of silence, introspection, and the depths of your hidden mind.

Stepping onto the Path of Vipassana:

Embrace the Unfolding: My friendā€™s sage advice resonated: ā€œDonā€™t overthink it. Let the technique unfold within the retreat.ā€ This guide offers essential knowledge without spoiling the journey of discovery.

1. What to Pack

Essential Companions:

  • Unscented personal hygiene: Pack your trusted unscented toiletries like toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. Remember feminine hygiene products if needed.

  • Hydration hero: A reusable water bottle will be your best friend throughout the day. Stay hydrated and mindful with every sip.

  • Comfort in every step: Slippers or sandals will provide comfort and ease as you move around the center.

  • Mindful attire: Choose loose, comfortable clothing that covers your knees and shoulders. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for meditation sessions. Avoid tight, transparent, or revealing clothing. Respect the centerā€™s dress code and maintain a mindful presence through your attire.

Optional Additions:

  • Bedding and meditation cushions: While some centers provide these, itā€™s best to check after registration and bring your own if needed.

  • Mask: A face mask may be required for certain indoor spaces or during group activities

  • Mosquito spray: If the center is located in an area with mosquitoes, consider bringing a natural insect repellent to safeguard your peace of mind.

  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sunā€™s rays, especially if youā€™ll be spending time outdoors during meditation breaks or walks.

2. Understanding the Guidelines

  • Noble Silence: Be prepared for a period of silence, fostering inward reflection.

  • Disciplined Routine: Embrace the daily schedule of meditations, meals, and breaks.

  • Adherence to Precepts: Familiarize yourself with the five basic moral precepts observed during the retreat.

All who attend a Vipassana course must conscientiously undertake the following five precepts for the duration of the course:

  1. to abstain from killing any being
  2. to abstain from stealing
  3. to abstain from all sexual activity
  4. to abstain from telling lies
  5. to abstain from all intoxicants

There are three additional precepts which old students (that is, those who have completed a course) are expected to follow during the course:

  1. to abstain from eating after midday
  2. to abstain from sensual entertainment and bodily decorations
  3. to abstain from using high or luxurious beds

4. Beyond the Meditation Hall in Cambodia

Address: google maps

Reaching the Cambodia Vipassana Dhamma Center offers a variety of options! You can hop on a local bus for a scenic journey, or opt for a convenient taxi ride that takes approximately 3 hours from Phnom Penh.

Passing through the gates, a hushed reverence descended, accentuated by the separation of men and womenā€™s quarters. The centerā€™s intimate layout, easily walkable in 20 minutes, felt like stepping into a haven of stillness, inviting exploration and self-discovery.

There in Cambodia were around 50 men (20 old students and 30 newbies) and 60 women participating. Each of us was assigned a simple room with a bathroom, toilet, bed, and a small meditation corner.
